Description
Beautiful Swiss Made Upright Piano by Sprecher & Company
This is a rare and early upright piano built by Sprecher & Company of Zurich, Switzerland. Christian Sprecher was an active builder in Germany and Switzerland from the 1830s - 1880s and his pianos were featured in the Crystal Palace in New York City and in the Great Exhibition of London.
This lovely piano is made of exotic vertical-grain rosewood and is of the Neoclassical style. The instruments is beautifully adorned with handprinted murals across the front panels depicting scenes from Greek Mythology. At the left we see Calliope, the superior muse of heroic poems and inspiration to Homer as he wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey (which might explain why they are all in a boat on some sort of journey). In the center is Euterpe, muse of music, and last is Polymnia, muse of divine hymns; Polymnia is often depicted looking to the sky holding a lyre.
Instruments by Sprecher are quite rare here in the United States. This piano will be restored to like-new condition, inside and out. Computerized player mechanisms can be installed if desired.
