Stunning Custom Designed Steinway & Sons Louis XVI Model M Grand Piano
Early 20th Century America was a period of lavish lifestyles, excessive luxury and great prosperity. Several piano manufacturers specialized in creating custom, one-of-a-kind pianos on special order for wealthier clients in order to match their home’s décor often in historical or period furniture styles. In the early 20th Century, it was not uncommon for a wealthy client to visit the prominent Steinway Piano Factory, choose the instrument they preferred among all others, then have the factory commission artists to customize the instrument they chose. This piano would have been picked out among many for its fine tone quality, and then a small fortune spent to have the cabinet custom made to suit the client’s décor!
This beautiful instrument is a Steinway Model “M” built in 1917, the “Golden Age” of piano building in America. The piano is made in the carved Louis XVI quad-leg style and was custom painted to suit the décor of the original owner. The art work on this instrument is truly spectacular and has been amazingly well preserved. The base color of warm yellow cream comes alive with vibrant golds, reds, pinks and greens. The instrument has an overall formal and elegant appearance. Although the instrument is detailed enough to be a focal point in its own right, the way the art work is done has an understated effect that would allow the instrument to compliment a beautiful interior without standing apart in contrast.
The piano is being internally restored to “like new” condition while the paintings are being restored to maintain the beauty of their original patina.
Computerized player mechanisms can be installed if desired.
