Very Late James & Holmstrom Rococo Style Square Grand Piano
Originally established in 1860, the firm of James & Holmstrom was one of America’s small yet very successful piano manufacturers. The firm was known for achieving exceptional quality by keeping production on a smaller scale.
This piano is a rare late-model square grand model by James & Holmstrom. Before about 1880, more square grand pianos were built in America than both upright pianos and grand pianos combined! By 1885, upright pianos had gained favor with American culture because they took up considerably less space in the home. The popularity of the upright piano forced most piano manufacturers to discontinue all square grand piano models before 1890. Built in 1898, this instrument is a rare example of one of the latest and most evolved square pianos ever produced in America.
This piano is made of Brazilian Rosewood and is of the carved Rococo Victorian style. This is a large, full size piano with a great deal of power and tone generally associated with very late square pianos. This instrument will be restored to like-new condition, inside and out. It can be
