This one-of-a-kind instrument was privately commissioned and custom designed by the illustrious firm of Epple & Sons.
This custom made Steinway upright piano was designed and executed by the illustrious design firm of Epple & Sons. The instrument is made of rare white mahogany wood and is of the late Empire Revival style. Note the exquisitely carved panels and brass ormolu trim. The following information comes directly from Steinway’s historical archives:
“Our records indicate Steinway & Sons #88341 is a style F upright, 4’ 5½” tall, in white mahogany finish, which was manufactured in New York and completed on April 8, 1890. This instrument was delivered to N. F. Reynal, 263 Madison Avenue, New York City on April 15th, 1890.
This piano originally had a custom art-case designed by Epple & Sons. The artist would have been privately commissioned by the purchaser, a common practice at the time.”
This instrument has been incredibly well preserved. Even now, prior to restoration, this piano has a large, full tone quality and superior touch. The piano will be painstakingly restored, both inside and out, with all restoration work done with a historical perspective in mind.
