This is a rare “Transposing” piano. It allows the pianist to shift the piano keys up or down so that the instrument can transpose itself to play in any key in the musical sale
The firm of James & Holmstrom was known for being a pioneer in piano technology and evolution. In the early 20th Century, James & Holmstrom built a handful of "Transposing Pianos". These pianos can literally shift the keyboard up or down so that the pianist can transpose the tone of the piece to a different musical scale! For example, if a pianist has a piece of sheet music, they can play the music 3 half steps lower or higher to suit the range of a vocalist. All the pianist has to do is pull out and hold a knob at the left side of the keyboard to disengage the mechanisms, then turn a crank wheel underneath the keyboard to move the piano action to the desired position. When the knob is released, the piano action falls into place with the piano keys, but in a different musical key.
This rare Transposing Piano is made of beautiful Imported Honduran Mahogany wood and is of the carved Edwardian style. Note the elegant carved details and beautiful woodgrain. This piano will be restored to like-new condition, inside and out, with all restoration done with a historical perspective in mind.
