description

The Wing & Son Piano Company had a reputation for building only high quality pianos and sold them exclusively from their lavish mail order catalogs. This particular piano was sold as the “Style 29 Concert Grand” according to its original sales catalog (see photos).

This rare Wing & Son 5 pedal orchestral upright grand piano is unusual because it is made of beautifully figured Quarter Sawn Oak wood. It has beautifully carved panels, richly detailed moldings, and elegant paneled sides. Oak Victorian pianos are less common than mahogany or rosewood because the darker finishes were more popular at the time. Since oak was a common domestic wood, it was not considered to be exotic and was rarely used for piano cabinets until the ”˜teens and ”˜twenties, making it rare and desirable on carved Victorian style pianos like this one.

This piano is equipped with 5 pedals which mimic sounds of the mandolin, banjo, harp, and zither. One cannot imagine how delightful it is to listen to one of these pianos when properly restored, and this piano is generally a favorite among our guests. When not engaged, the piano plays normally without any interference from these pedal attachments. The sound and touch of these Wing pianos is unmatched, as they are truly magnificent, rare, and wonderful instruments.

This piano is being completely restored, inside and out, with a historical perspective in mind. If desired, this piano can be equipped with the Pianomation player system, and can play by itself by streaming music live on an iPod, computer, iPad, etc. The original matching piano bench is included.
