Grovesteen & Company was established in Albany, NY in 1825, making them one of the first piano manufacturers in America. Grovesteen built pianos under several different names over the years, indicating the Grovesteen took in several different business partners throughout the 19th Century as the company evolved. Names produced included Grovesteen & Company, Grovesteen & Fuller, Grovesteen & Hale, Grovesteen & Ilsley, Grovesteen & Truslow, and Townsend & Grovesteen. The firm had a superior reputation for building exceptional pianos.
This beautiful piano was built by Grovesteen & Co. in about 1860. The instrument is made of Brazilian Rosewood and is of the Empire Revival Victorian style. The soft, “harp like” quality of these Civil War era square pianos is very pleasing to the ear! The instrument is being restored to like-new condition, inside and out.
