Pleyel was one of the largest and most successful piano builders in Europe; they were undoubtedly the most romantic piano builder of all time. Pleyel specialized in manufacturing custom-made, specially designed instruments for European elite, many of these instruments being very avant-garde and even shocking in appearance!
The post-WWI era saw a resurgence in historic and period furniture styles in the interior design industry. Pleyel custom-built this piano to resemble an 18th century Italian harpsichord in the painted Louis XVI style. Sitting tall and proud on 7 individual Louis XVI style legs, the case is adorned with hand-painted murals accented in distressed greens and yellows and trimmed in aged antique gold. This piano was obviously created to appear “larger than life”; the exterior cabinet was made longer, taller and deeper than the instrument within, giving the illusion of massive grandeur fit for a Medieval castle. This piano is an example of the Expressive Reproducing Player Piano offered on the Kramer Kewpie. The instrument is finished in a brilliant red finish with exquisitely detailed hand-painted Chinoiserie. In about 1928 the illustrious M. Schulz Piano Company introduced a limited number of tiny “Child Size” baby grand pianos under the “Marionette” label. The tone of these little pianos will surprise you; the sound quality is comparable to a traditional baby grand, and those who hear them are amazed! This beautiful instrument is a Steinway Model “M” built in 1917, the “Golden Age” of piano building in America. The piano is made in the carved Louis XVI quad-leg style and was custom painted to suit the décor of the original owner. The art work on this instrument is truly spectacular and has been amazingly well preserved. The base color of warm yellow cream comes alive with vibrant golds, reds, pinks and greens. The instrument has an overall formal and elegant appearance. Although the instrument is detailed enough to be a focal point in its own right, the way the art work is done has an understated effect that would allow the instrument to compliment a beautiful interior without standing apart in contrast.
