About this piano:  The Sohmer Piano Company built pianos for well over a century and was one of the last American piano manufacturers that hand-built their pianos. They are well known for their exceptionally high quality and workmanship. This custom made, one-of-a-kind instrument is one of Sohmer’s famous “Cupid” model baby grand pianos. The original buyer would have picked this piano out among all others at the Sohmer factory. They then would have contracted a special artist through Sohmer’s art department to finish the piano in this “Custom Decorated Lacquer” finish to match their home decor. Underneath the musty yellow tint of the aged finish, the piano is adorned with breathtaking French inspired Vernis Martin Golden Crème toned Paintings. The entire piano has detailed hand-painted scenes of frolicking lovers, serenading mistrals, and floral bouquets set against the French Countryside. This unique piano was carefully restored inside and out by our team of craftspeople and artisans.

Assessment & Disassembly

The piano is meticulously disassembled with every part photoed and cataloged.

Cabinet Repair & Refinishing

The old finish had to be very carefully removed so as to not damage the beautiful artwork underneath. After the old finish had been successfully removed the vignettes covering the cabinet were professionally restored by our resident artist. After mindfully restoring the artwork, the cabinet is sealed with a protective layer of high quality finish.

Piano Restoration Process:

Soundboard Repair & Re-Stringing

Repairs are made to the piano’s original soundboard. Cracks and structural issues are addressed before the plate is put back into the piano. Once the plate is securely fastened to the soundboard the process of re-stringing the piano begins. Each new piano string is appended to the instrument in accordance with the piano’s original string scale.

Action & Keyboard Restoration

The original action mechanism is restored to working order and the piano is outfitted with new hammers giving the instrument a rich tone.

AFTER COMPLETE RESTORATION
