DEPOSITS: The restoration of this instrument has not been completed. A 30% deposit is required on instruments pending restoration. This deposit holds the instrument and keeps it from being offered to another clients, and it also makes that piano's restoration a priority. Once we complete the restoration, we invite the client to visit our shop to see and hear the piano. If the client is unable to visit our shop, we will send professional photos and videos of the piano for review. The client then has the option of paying the balance and purchasing the piano, transferring their balance to another piano in our shop, or getting a full refund for their deposit. The client is never at risk.

DESCRIPTION

For generations, the Chickering name has been associated with fine piano manufacturing. Jonas Chickering is known to be America’s first official piano manufacturer, however it is not as well known that Jonas Chickering first had a partner by the name of James Stewart during his first 3 years in business. These earliest pianos were labeled as “Stewart & Chickering” from about 1823 – 1826. In about 1826, Jonas Chickering admitted his sons into partnership and the firm was changed to the more well-known “Chickering & Sons”.

This piano is an incredibly early and rare example of one of the few original Stewart & Chickering pianos known to still exist. The instrument was built in 1824, making it one of the first pianos built in America. This lovely instrument is made of Honduran mahogany wood and is of the Early American style. Note the beauty in its simplicity; the beautifully turned legs and the richly figured mahogany woodgrain give this piece an overall regal and elegant appearance.

This piano is being restored to like-new condition, inside and out, with a historical perspective in mind. This rare instrument is of true museum caliber and is an important part of America’s musical heritage.
