Very Rare 20th Century Carved Jacobean Style Mathushek Spinet Grand Piano in Mahogany
The Mathushek Piano Company was one of the most advanced and foreword-thinking piano manufacturers of all time. In the 1930’s era, Mathushek went against the norm and introduced a line of tiny square grand pianos called the “Spinet Grand”. These contemporary instruments were based on the same general design of Mathushek’s 19th Century square grand pianos, but they were redesigned in style and appearance so that they would fit well with modern décor and could be tuned and serviced the same as any modern baby grand piano. The Spinet Grand piano enjoyed moderate success during the 1930s and 1940s, but was never a substantial seller. They are quite rare today.
The early 20th Century saw the revival of period and historically inspired designs in furniture and interior design. This Mathushek Spinet Grand was built in 1936 and is known as the “Late Jacobean” model. The original catalog description states “True to this early period of English furniture design, and particularly appropriate in the English type home.” Note the beautifully carved legs and elaborate moldings. This instrument really is a rare example of Post-Depression era piano manufacturing at its finest.
