Description
The J. & C. Fischer Piano Company was among the most prominent and respected piano manufacturers in New York during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Founded in 1840, the firm built a reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, tonal richness, and artistic cabinet work. For well over a century, Fischer pianos were highly regarded by musicians, educators, and discerning households, remaining in production into the modern era, a testament to their enduring quality and legacy.
This instrument represents the pinnacle of the Fischer product line: a full-size “upright grand.” During the late 19th century, these large uprights were engineered to deliver the tonal depth, volume, and responsiveness of a grand piano while maintaining a more compact footprint. With its tall cabinet, extended string length, and expansive soundboard, this model was specifically designed to rival the performance of many contemporary grand pianos, a remarkable achievement in piano design. It is especially noteworthy that Fischer upright pianos originally retailed for as much as $1,100 in the 19th Century, a staggering sum at the time, equivalent to the cost of a modest home.
This piano is a striking example of late Victorian design, crafted from beautifully figured exotic-grain mahogany. The casework reflects a sophisticated blend of Gothic and Eastlake stylistic influences, combining architectural strength with intricate decorative detail. The carved front legs, ornate moldings, and finely executed fretwork panels all speak to the level of artistry involved; features that would have required extensive hand craftsmanship and specialized skill. This is not merely a musical instrument, but a true piece of functional art from America’s “Golden Age” of piano building.
This piano will be meticulously restored to like-new condition, both structurally and musically, with careful attention to historical accuracy and detail. Even in its current unrestored state, the instrument exhibits a rich, full-bodied tone, an encouraging indicator of the exceptional performance it will offer once restoration is complete.
For those seeking modern functionality, the piano may also be equipped with a state-of-the-art player system, such as QRS Pianomation system. This technology allows the instrument to play itself via wireless streaming from a smart device, providing access to a vast library of over 15,000 song titles while preserving the piano’s traditional manual playability.
A matching piano bench is included.
