DESCRIPTION

This lovely piano was built by H. & F. Hoerr in Toronto in about 1895. This piano is one of the most detailed and ornately carved upright pianos we have in our collection. This piano appears to be a “one of a kind” custom made piece, perhaps commissioned by a Canadian head of state or government official. The carvings on this piano are quite stunning, and each one represents a part of Canada’s right history including Great Britan’s Royal Crest!
This piano is made of walnut wood with burl wood accents around the keyboard. The front panel of the piano features the Royal Crest carved in exquisite detail. Etched inside this Royal Crest is the phrase “DIEU ET MON DROIT”, translated as “GOD AND MY RIGHT” – the motto for Great Brittan’s Royal Family. Also inscribed in this Royal Crest are the words “HON SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE”, translated as “EVIL UNTO HIM WHO THINKS EVIL OF IT” – the motto of the British Chivalric Order of the Garter.
The lower panels depict carvings representing different Canadian Provinces from 1895, along with images of the Union Flag, the Flag of Great Brittan.
Either side of the piano has extensive relief carving representing different kinds of trade and agriculture popular in Canada during the late 19th Century, including carved deer, beavers, and other assorted wildlife.
The keyboard is adorned by two beautifully carved Sphinxes, each figure complete with the head of a woman, body of a lion, and wings of an eagle. (Note the noses on each of these sphinx faces has been damaged over time, and the noses will be restored to perfection by our master woodcarver during the restoration process). The front legs feature beautifully carved Griffins, complete with the head of a lion and body of an eagle. The overall detail of this cabinet is simply stunning in every detail!
Standing a proud 60 inches high, this piano is one of the largest full size “upright grand” pianos we have in our collection. Even now, prior to restoration, the overall tone quality of this piano is large, deep and awesome, a quality unlike anything found in the new small upright pianos of today.
This piano is being restored to like new condition, inside and out. If desired, this piano can be equipped with the Pianomation player system, and can play by itself by streaming music live on an iPod, computer, iPad, etc. Thousands of song titles are available!
A matching antique piano stool is included.
