Jonas Chickering was the first piano manufacturer in America. The Chickering firm was established in 1823 in Boston, 30 years before Steinway, and the company built the finest pianos the world has known. Famous American Artists such as Liszt and Gottschalk requested Chickering concert grand pianos at their performance halls because they were the most powerful instruments available at the time. Liszt was known to say that this model piano was one of the only instruments that would endure his abusive performances unscathed!

This piano is a rare example of a full-size concert grand from the height of the Victorian era. Full-size concert grand pianos are generally considered "utilitarian", being intended for institutional and stage use, and they generally very plain and simple in appearance. This piano is especially unusual because it is made of heavily carved Brazilian Rosewood. It is of the Rococo Victorian style, indicating it was likely built for a lavish private residence where it could blend in with the most exquisite surroundings. Note the extensive use of heavy carved legs and moldings that contrast beautifully to the delicately carved filigree music stand. A full size concert grand piano would have been the most costly instruments money could buy, and one built in such an elaborate case would have been even more expensive, making them something only a wealthy few could ever afford.

Although this piano is a classic 19th Century Victorian piece, it is remarkably modern in design. The piano has a full 88 note keyboard (rarely found on pianos from this period). The original ivory keys are in pristine condition and will be restored to perfection. The entire piano is being restored to like new condition, inside and out. An original matching stool is included. The Pianomation player system can be installed if desired.
